A fierce political battle has erupted after Texas Republican Representative Brandon Gill publicly called for the deportation of Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, sparking outrage and applause across the political spectrum.
In a charged post on X (formerly Twitter), Gill claimed America would be “a better place” if Omar were deported back to Somalia—the country she fled as a child refugee before becoming a U.S. citizen. His post included a viral video of Omar speaking to Somali immigrants, which quickly became the center of controversy.
The video, originally posted by conservative influencer Greg Price, shows Omar advising immigrants—potentially including undocumented individuals—on their legal rights when approached by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). “You are not obligated to answer their questions,” Omar says in the clip. “Just state that you are advised by a lawyer not to answer questions.”
Price accused Omar of helping illegal immigrants evade law enforcement, a claim that fueled outrage among conservative audiences. Many supporters of Gill echoed his demand, with some branding Omar “anti-American” and calling for her expulsion from Congress. “Isn’t this against the law? Expel her!” one user posted. Others went even further, accusing her of aiding a “foreign invasion.”
A spokesperson for Gill doubled down, saying, “Representative Omar’s conduct raises serious questions about her loyalty—to the American people or to illegal immigrants from Somalia. It is disgraceful for a sitting member of Congress to encourage defiance of immigration law.”
Omar swiftly fired back in an interview with journalist Mehdi Hasan, calling Gill’s remarks “idiotic” and slamming the overall level of discourse in American politics. “The stupidity they display daily is embarrassing—not just for Congress, but for America as a whole,” she said.
She also framed the controversy as part of a larger trend of rising anti-immigrant sentiment, which she linked to the political influence of former President Donald Trump. “This is the kind of rhetoric that leads to the dumbing down of our political dialogue,” she warned. “How else do we get another Trump presidency?”
The clash between Gill and Omar underscores the deepening ideological fault lines in Congress, where debates over immigration, nationalism, and loyalty to country are becoming ever more volatile. For conservatives, Omar’s remarks are seen as a breach of American values; for progressives, Gill’s comments represent a dangerous escalation of xenophobic rhetoric—even against naturalized citizens serving in public office.
As the debate rages online and in the halls of Congress, one thing is clear: this latest firestorm is more than just a war of words—it’s a reflection of America’s ongoing struggle over who belongs, who leads, and what it means to be American.

“At this point, it’s nearly impossible to have an intellectual debate with any of them,” Omar said. “The sheer level of ignorance they display on a daily basis is, frankly, embarrassing—not just for Congress, but for our country as a whole.”
