An Air India flight bound for London tragically crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, carrying 244 people, lost contact just seconds after takeoff and crashed into a nearby residential area, resulting in a large fire and visible plumes of smoke. Emergency crews were quickly dispatched to the scene, and authorities are investigating the cause.
The aircraft, operating as flight AI171, had 232 passengers and 12 crew members on board. Among the passengers were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, and several others from Canada and Portugal. Calm weather conditions were reported at the time, and the aircraft had reached an altitude of just 625 feet before issuing a mayday call and disappearing from radar.
India’s Civil Aviation Minister confirmed the crash and stated that rescue and medical response teams were working at full capacity. The airport in Ahmedabad has been temporarily closed. Officials expressed deep sorrow and emphasized their commitment to supporting affected families.
This is the first recorded crash involving the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, a model with an otherwise strong safety record. The incident adds pressure on Boeing, which is already managing scrutiny over other aircraft models. A full investigation is underway to determine the cause and prevent future tragedies.
