Richard Gere’s Former Connecticut Estate Faces Bold Transformation

The once-idyllic New Canaan estate owned by Hollywood icon Richard Gere is entering a striking new chapter. Purchased for $10.75 million in late 2024 by luxury developer SBP Homes, the 32-acre property—anchored by a stately 1938 Colonial mansion—is now being cleared to make way for a nine-lot subdivision.

A Stirring Goodbye to a Historic Gem

The news of the demolition has stirred strong emotions in the community. The classic residence, admired for its timeless architecture and cinematic past, is being razed—a decision that many have found heartbreaking.

“What a shame. That was one beautiful home,” one commenter lamented online, while others criticized the move as a blow to New Canaan’s heritage in favor of profit.

The Largest Subdivision in Years

According to Realtor.com (May 23, 2025), the land will soon be divided into plots ranging from 2.2 to 4.8 acres—marking the town’s largest residential development since 2007. These parcels will be sold as premium lots for new, custom-built homes, signaling a shift from classic to contemporary living.

Salvaging the Past

Before demolition began, Hudson Valley House Parts swooped in to preserve pieces of the home’s architectural soul. The salvage team rescued hand-carved oak panels, elegant stone mantels, vintage bay windows, and the original grand entryway.

Reggie Young, the company’s founder, voiced both sadness and hope:

“It’s a real shame the house is being torn down. Once the stuff is gone, it’s never coming back.”
Yet he also noted that salvaging helps preserve craftsmanship and benefits the environment by giving old materials new life.

From Hollywood Retreat to Spanish Horizon

Gere, who bought the estate from musicians Paul Simon and Edie Brickell in 2022, initially envisioned transforming the property into a private farm. But life had other plans. Following his and wife Alejandra Silva’s relocation to Spain, those dreams were shelved—and a new era for the land has begun

A Spanish Sojourn: Richard Gere’s New Life Abroad and Plans to Return

After decades in the Hollywood spotlight and a peaceful retreat in Connecticut, Richard Gere has embraced a quieter, more intimate chapter of life in Spain. Now living in Madrid with his wife, Alejandra Silva, and their young sons, the couple is savoring family time, cultural connection, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Home in Madrid—For Now

Though they’ve made a comfortable life in Spain, the couple doesn’t see it as a permanent move. In an April 2025 interview with The Daily Mail, Alejandra hinted at future plans:

“We just have to balance our lives there and here,” she said, noting how much she misses the U.S.

Richard’s eldest son, 25-year-old Homer Gere, echoed her sentiments, expressing his hope that the family will return to the States within the next few years.

Happier Than Ever

Despite the temporary nature of their stay, Gere told Elle España in January 2025 that life in Spain has been deeply fulfilling:

“We are happier than ever. Alejandra is home, and if she is happy, I am happy.”

Their move is more than personal—it’s also purposeful. The couple shares a strong passion for environmental advocacy, working side by side on sustainability initiatives, including the Sierra a Mar project in Mexico. In a Vanity Fair Spain profile, Gere explained:

“She gave me six years in my world. Now it’s only fair I give her at least six in hers.”

Spotlight on Homer Gere

While Richard and Alejandra enjoy life abroad, the spotlight is beginning to shift toward Homer Gere, Richard’s son with actress Carey Lowell. In April 2025, Homer made headlines when he attended the City Harvest Gala in New York alongside his father and stepmother.

Social media lit up with admiration:

“Son is handsome just like his dad!”
“Wow, he could be the next Superman!”

Others noted Homer’s strong resemblance to his mother:

“He’s the spitting image of his mom, not Richard.”

This wasn’t Homer’s first moment in the limelight. In May 2024, he walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival with his father and Alejandra, turning heads and generating buzz about the Gere family’s next generation.
