For 13 years, he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to an Augustinian missionary campaign in the province of La Vega. His unwavering presence in numerous communities brought messages of faith and hope, touching countless lives. In recognition of his extraordinary service, he was honored with the Order of Saint Augustine, the highest distinction bestowed by the institution.
Monsignor Jesús Castro Marte, bishop of the Diocese of Our Lady of Altagracia in Higüey, confirmed that the new pontiff made frequent visits to the country during his time as superior, strengthening ties and inspiring the faithful.
The bishop highlighted that Prevost often traveled on foot through various towns such as Palmarito, Barranca, Jamo, and Licey. In every visit, he passionately shared his deep commitment to service and the Christian faith.
Castro Marte described Prevost as approachable and open to dialogue, noting his “postmodern way of thinking.” He added, “He is a simple, humble man with a remarkable ability to truly listen to others.”
One of Prevost’s most memorable visits took place in 2004 at the Colegio Agustiniano de La Vega, where his arrival was met with great enthusiasm from the entire community.
During this event, he was honored with the Order of Saint Augustine—the highest distinction awarded by this esteemed educational and religious institution in the Dominican Republic.
At that time, Robert Francis Prevost served as Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine worldwide, earning recognition for his genuine closeness to people.
During his visit to the school, he spent meaningful time with students, teachers, and members of the religious community—an experience that left a profound impact on all who participated.
His leadership, marked by humility and leading by example, shone clearly throughout the visit, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who had the chance to meet and listen to him.
For many, Prevost was more than just a spiritual leader; he was an approachable, compassionate person deeply committed to his religious mission. His election as pope calls to mind those heartfelt encounters.
The communities he visited in La Vega cherish special memories of his presence, and his enduring message of faith and service continues to inspire those who shared in his missionary journey
