Brother of Pope Leo XIV Responds to Controversial Social Media Posts
The older brother of newly elected Pope Leo XIV has responded to criticism over a controversial social media post he shared before his brotherโs rise to the papacy. In a recent interview, Louis Prevost, 73, stood by the messageโwhile also acknowledging the need for more careful communication in light of his brotherโs new global role.
The interview, aired on โPiers Morgan Uncensored,โ comes just days after Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, was elected to lead the Catholic Church. Louis, known for his outspoken personality, addressed a past social media post that referenced U.S. political figures in a crude way.
โI wouldnโt have posted it if I didnโt kind of believe it,โ Prevost said during the interview, referring to the video clip he shared that criticized former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. While not issuing a full apology, he admitted that recent events had caused him to reconsider how his words might reflect on others, especially his brother.
โSince then, Iโve been very quiet, biting my tongue at some of the stuff out there on social media, because I donโt want to create waves that donโt need to be there,โ he added. โHeโs going to have enough on his plate.โ
Clarifying the Popeโs Values
Louis Prevost also shared insights into his brotherโs beliefs, describing Pope Leo XIV as someone who likely will take a balanced, thoughtful approach in his leadership.
โHeโs not going to take the Church hard left,โ he said. โI think heโll stay in the middle.โ
Prevost noted that while the pope may be open to reformsโsuch as expanding the advisory roles of women in the Churchโhe likely will uphold traditional Catholic teachings on core issues, including marriage and the priesthood.
โHe may bring more inclusion, but I donโt think youโll see him changing Church doctrine overnight,โ he added.
Public Reaction and Expectations
The papal transition has sparked global conversation, with many looking to Pope Leo XIV for moral leadership on urgent issues, including migration. U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi recently voiced hope that the pope would speak out against mass deportations, pointing to his prior expressions of concern for vulnerable communities.
โHeโs made clear what his values are,โ Pelosi said in an interview. โAnd it is important for us to listen to the words of our religious leaders.โ
Looking Ahead
As Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy, his personal and spiritual leadership will be under close watch. While his brotherโs earlier social media posts have caused a stir, Church observers note that the new pontiffโs priorities appear to be centered on unity, compassion, and responsibility.
For now, the focus remains on the future direction of the Catholic Church under its new leader, with many hopeful that Pope Leo XIV will bring a steady voice to a world in need of faith and guidance.
