The Obama family shared deeply sad news on Friday — Marian Robinson, beloved mother of former First Lady Michelle Obama, has peacefully passed away at the age of 86.
Michelle honored her mother with a moving tribute on social media, calling Marian “my rock” and reflecting on her unwavering support. “She was there for whatever I needed—the same steady support for our whole family. We’re heartbroken to lose her today,” Michelle wrote.
Former President Barack Obama also paid tribute, describing Marian as truly one-of-a-kind. “We feel lucky to have had her in our lives,” he posted. “We’ll spend our years trying to live by her example.”
Born Marian Shields in 1937, she married Fraser Robinson III, a World War II veteran and Chicago water department worker. Together, they raised Michelle and her brother Craig in a modest home on Chicago’s South Side.
Despite facing the harsh realities of segregation—her father was denied union jobs because of race—Marian instilled the values of education, resilience, and strength in her children. These principles helped shape Michelle’s journey to Princeton University and beyond.
During Barack Obama’s presidency, Marian moved into the White House to care for her granddaughters Malia and Sasha, providing them a sense of normalcy amid extraordinary circumstances.
Though she rarely sought the spotlight, the family affectionately called Marian their “secret weapon” — a source of wisdom, home-cooked meals, and unconditional love through some of the most historic moments in American history.
After the presidency, Marian returned to Chicago, living quietly and away from public attention. In recent years, her health had declined.
The Obamas have asked for privacy as they mourn this tremendous loss. Funeral arrangements have yet to be announced.
Marian Robinson leaves behind a lasting legacy as the humble, steadfast matriarch who helped nurture America’s first Black first family—reminding us all that behind every great woman, there is often an even greater mother.
