Man Cut in Half by Forklift Shares Shocking Photo and Inspiring Story of Survival
Loren Schauers was just 19 years old when a devastating workplace accident changed his life forever. While operating a forklift on a bridge in Montana in 2019, Loren lost control and plummeted off the edge—an unimaginable fall that ended with the massive industrial vehicle crushing the entire lower half of his body and one of his arms.
Miraculously, Loren survived—but only thanks to a rare and extreme surgical procedure known as a hemicorporectomy, in which the lower half of the body is surgically removed, including the pelvis, legs, and lower organs. According to the National Library of Medicine, this complex operation involves disarticulation of the lumbar spine and complete transection of the spinal cord.
In addition to the loss of his lower body, Loren’s crushed arm also had to be partially amputated.
Since the accident, Loren and his wife Sabia have bravely chosen to share their journey with the world. Through their YouTube channel, they answer questions and offer insight into their life post-surgery—providing a powerful example of resilience and love.
In one candid video, Loren addressed a common question: how he goes to the bathroom. He explained that he now uses a colostomy bag, a medical device connected to an opening in his large intestine that collects waste—just one of the many adaptations he’s had to make in his new reality.
Despite the unimaginable trauma, Loren’s courage and openness continue to inspire thousands across the globe.
