According to reports, Mac Sinise received the devastating diagnosis of a rare form of bone cancer in 2019—just two months after his mother, Moira, was diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer. While Moira bravely fought through her battle and was eventually declared cancer-free, Mac sadly lost his courageous fight in January 2024.
In the wake of his son’s passing, Gary Sinise shared a heartfelt statement on the Gary Sinise Foundation website:
“He died on January 5, 2024, at 3:25 p.m. and was laid to rest on January 23rd. Like any family enduring such a profound loss, we are heartbroken and doing our best to cope… I am so blessed, fortunate, and proud to be his dad.”
In a recent interview with People magazine, Sinise revealed that Mac had battled chordoma—a rare type of bone cancer that affects only around 300 people in the United States each year.
It looked like a monster grabbing my son’s spine,” Sinise recalled, describing the haunting image of Mac’s MRI scan.
Although doctors were able to remove the tumor, Mac was tragically one of the few chordoma patients whose cancer returned.
With his son hospitalized for six of the first eight months of 2020, the Forrest Gump star made the painful decision to step away from the spotlight and pause his career — dedicating himself fully to supporting Mac’s fight for survival.
“That’s when I stopped acting,” Sinise shared with People. “I poured every ounce of my energy into searching for a miracle for Mac.”
