UK Girl, 11, Found Dead in River Nearly Two Weeks After Birthday Party Disappearance

Nationwide — Heartbreak has struck the family of 11-year-old Kaliyah Coa, a Black schoolgirl from the UK, whose body was found nearly two weeks after she fell into the River Thames while attending a birthday party.

On March 31, Kaliyah had the day off from school due to an inset day and joined a celebration in North Woolwich. Around 1:23 p.m., she tragically fell into the river near Barge House Causeway. Despite an extensive search effort, there was no sign of her for nearly two weeks.

On the morning of April 13, police recovered a body from the Thames near Maritime Quay on the Isle of Dogs. Formal identification confirmed on April 29 that it was Kaliyah.

Her devastated family released a heartfelt statement:

“Our hearts are broken and our lives will never be the same. We were blessed to have Kaliyah, even if it was for such a short time. She will be missed so much.”

They expressed deep gratitude to those involved in the search and have asked for privacy as they grieve.

Detective Superintendent Scott Ware, who led the investigation, described the incident as a “tragic accident” and urged the public not to spread misinformation, emphasizing the family’s plea for respect during this difficult time.

An inquest into Kaliyah’s death is scheduled to begin on Friday, May 2.
