Tragic new details have emerged about the mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, revealing that 14-year-old Mason Schermerhorn sent a last text message to his mother from a restroom during the chaos ā moments before he was killed.
Mason, one of four victims in the devastating attack, was autistic but never let that define him. His youth minister and chaplain, Ronald Clark, who arrived at the scene to assist in the aftermath, shared a heartbreaking account of his efforts to help Masonās mother locate her son amid the turmoil.
Clark, who was alerted to the tragedy while shopping nearby, immediately rushed to the school and offered his help to authorities. As he assisted, he encountered injured students courageously sharing their traumatic experiences, hoping to process the horror they had endured.
Masonās mother initially believed her son was safe after receiving his text saying he was in the restroom. However, when Clark showed her a photo of Mason at the command post, the painful reality struck: Mason was among the four confirmed dead. Clark recalled the anguish of delivering this devastating news to Masonās mother, especially just a day after she had spoken about the strong bond she shared with her children.
Remembered as a joyful and friendly boy, Masonās light touched everyone around him. Despite his autism, he embraced life fully and was deeply loved by those who knew him.
Adding to the chilling picture of that day, messages from another 14-year-old student revealed the fear gripping the school. One text to his mother read, āSchool shooting rn. Iām scared, pls, Iām not joking.ā Later, he sent, āClass. Someoneās dead.ā
In the wake of the tragedy, Masonās sister, Alanna Wallace, has bravely spoken about the profound loss of her little brother. She described Mason as loving, energetic, and kind-hearted ā someone who embraced everyone regardless of their differences. Though younger, Mason was always protective of her.
Alanna shared how she is finding strength by holding onto Masonās positive spirit, supported by friends who are helping her through her grief during this unimaginable time.
